With a juraf by your bedside, you can assume your favorite reading position, swing the juraf into place, flip its head mounted switch on and VOILA, a precise beam of light to read by.

Lets face it, people read in bed.  Some people read so that they can fall asleep.  Some people wake up in the middle of the night and then read themselves back to sleep.  Some people just want to read in bed.  Well, what about that other person that sleeps with you?  Is it fair to them to keep the room lit up like the middle of the day?

Not really, so what are the alternatives?  I found bedside lamps, headboard lamps and book lights attached to the book, your glasses or a headband.

I tried them all and here is what I found:

Bedside lamps, because of their distance and position from your book, just need to brighten the room with too much light to properly illuminate your reading material.  Both your reading environment and your partners sleeping environment are not exactly optimal.

Headboard lamps are better but they still give you that annoying feeling of having a spotlight behind you.  If you wear glasses, that spotlight also shines onto the back of them, reflecting uncomfortably into your eyes.  Not exactly focusing the mood and your attention on your book!

Book lights mounted on your book are so close to your book that the light pattern is not uniform in intensity across the page.  This causes eye strain.  Additionally, the light beam moves with every movement of your body, every page turned and every movement of your bedmate.  It is amazing how distracting this is.

And talk about distraction caused by light beam movement, how about the lights that get mounted on your head somewhere.  It feels like being a coal miner.  Besides, imagine falling asleep with some contraption on your head, not very comfortable and they wake you up when you move in your sleep.

Talking about falling asleep with the light on, what about the fact that most of these book lights mounted on the book, or you, are battery powered?  Sure you could power them with a cord, but then you have a cord to wrap around your neck while you are sleeping.  Sounds like fun to me!

Your bedmate will sleep.  Light shines only where you need it.   Home    BUY Now

In both of these pictures, the juraf is turned ON.  Notice that when you view the juraf's head from the side or rear, you do not see any radiating light from the LED bulb.  This means that direct light from the juraf's LED will only go where you point it.

The beam is just where you want it, and no where else.  Not in your eyes, your bedmates eyes, or your dogs eyes.  This is the main reason I invented the juraf since I'm the one that is trying to sleep in our household.

No darn batteries to replace.  Wall powered by AC plug.   Home    BUY Now

Over the years I have developed a love/hate relationship with batteries.  I love them when they work and they are used in places where we need them.  I hate them when they run down and I have to reach into my wallet to replace them.  Also, with me, its just the annoyance of changing or maintaining them.

Well, a bedside reading light does not have to be battery powered, its that simple (unless you don't have electricity nearby).  The juraf will never cause my love/hate state of mind to rear its ugly head.  I think there are a lot of people out there who are with me on this one.

The design of this switching power supply is such that it only takes up one outlet position in a receptacle, even in power bars!

The power supply meets California's new strict power consumption regulations.  The current draw with the light off is about 1.2 ma and about 1.5 ma with it on.  The power cord extends about 40 inches out from the bottom of the mount tube.

Penny a month operation and cool, touchable LED bulb.   Home    BUY Now

The juraf utilizes state-of-the-art technology by using a Light Emitting Diode (LED) as the light source. LED’s are so efficient that only a small amount of electricity is needed to create wonderful white light.  In fact, at current electric rates, it only costs about a penny a month to use the juraf.  Lets see a battery powered lamp of equal intensity come anywhere near that cost.

In fact due to its efficiency and in contrast to ordinary reading lights, the juraf does not get hot. There is no danger of burning your fingers when you touch your juraf or suffering from radiant heat while you read.

Very uniform beam and pleasant color spectrum.   Home    BUY Now

In selecting the LED, I found that all LED's are not created equal.  In fact, some LED's beams are so loaded with dark spots and spots of different colors, that you have to move your reading material around, just to make out the words.  In my search, I came across the LED we now use.  As you can see in this picture with the LED 18 inches from the surface, the beam is of even color, uniform in intensity, and of a pleasant white color spectrum.

4 chip LED, brighter than most battery lights.   Home    BUY Now

Our 8mm LED is made out of 4 standard LED chips in one package.  This results in plenty of light to read by.  Battery powered lamps simply have to compromise on intensity to obtain adequate battery life.  To get their claimed, 50 and 100 hour durations, they have to use large batteries and limit their current or number of LED's.  The juraf has no such limitations and the LED was selected to provide just the right amount of light without overpowering your book in intensity.

Mounts to bed-side table or head-board.   Home    BUY Now

I spent a lot of time designing the clamp on the juraf.  The clamp will grip surfaces from 1/2 inch thick, all the way to 7 1/2 inches thick.  Also, the clamp grips the surface 3/4 inch from its edge so that it even grips surfaces with rounded edges.

The clips are fitted with 4 polyurethane, mechanically captivated, pressure pads.  This will ensure a firm but non-marring grip on your valuable furniture.

My favorite mounting method is to clamp the juraf to a thin hardcover book or similar object and then slip the book between your mattresses.   I call this the 'under the mattress' mounting position.   This is the cleanest looking position and works very well on any bed that has a mattress.
Once you have decided on a permanent mounting method you may wish to remove the excess threaded rod if it is a problem for you.  You may do this by bending it back and forth a few times near the plastic nut as shown.

Bendable, suits your reading position.   Home    BUY Now

I called my lamp the juraf for obvious reasons.  I took the liberty of misspelling natures giraffe, since there are common traits between the two species.  The juraf has a long 32 inch neck and can be bent to reach where it needs to, just like a real giraffe.  We find the optimum position for the LED is a little off to the side of your book and between your eyes and the reading surface.  To change your reading position from your back to your side involves a simply repositioning of the LED by swinging or sometimes bending its neck.

Swing away pivot for convenience.   Home    BUY Now

As a result of the juraf 's LED being near your book, I found that getting in and out of bed proved less than easy until I added the swing pivot at its base.  You can have the juraf bent to a nice reading position, yet simply push it away from you when you want to get out of bed.  Then when you get back in bed, all it takes to re-position the juraf is to swing it back in place.

Hidden power cable.   Home    BUY Now

The power cable runs inside the juraf 's neck and through its mounting tube where it appears near your wall plug.  You shouldn't even see it and it certainly won't be a hazard.  In fact, the power in the cable is less than 4 volts.  The 120 volts is converted to this low power right at the wall plug.   The power cord extends about 40 inches out from the bottom of the mount tube.
